Online Banking Security – Anti-Phishing Solution from Comodo

As previously described, Windsor Federal Savings has deployed a digital certificate or challenge question based Multi-Factor Authentication solution to verify that it is you, not a hacker from an unknown computer that is attempting to access your account(s).  In addition, the Bank has also deployed an Anti-Phishing solution from Comodo (a leading Certification Authority on the Internet – they put the padlock on websites) for you to verify that you are on an authentic Windsor Federal Savings site – BEFORE you divulge your sensitive information.

The combination of Multi-Factor Authentication and the use of Content Verification Certificates from Comodo provides a Mutual Authentication solution by which the Bank identifies you and you identify the Bank to assure secure and authentic online banking interactions.

Windsor Federal Savings is committed to safe and secure online banking interactions.

Banking online can be enormously productive.  You can look up interest rates, sign-on to access your account(s), reconcile your checkbook and even transfer funds all from the comfort of your own home or office.  But that ease and productivity can backfire terribly if you accidentally give your confidential information to a “fraudster”.  Many fraudsters launch “phishing” attacks that direct you to a fake or “phishing” site that looks identical to legitimate sites.  One reason phishing attacks are successful is that unsuspecting online banking users cannot determine that they are being directed to fraudulent web sites during the collection stage of an attack.  These sites are so well constructed that many users cannot determine that they are not legitimate.

Windsor Federal Savings is proud to offer a breakthrough way to protect you from phishing attacks so your confidential information stays confidential.  This new technology is provided to you free of charge as part of our ongoing effort to protect you from this type of threat.

This technology is called VerificationEngine from Comodo.  With this new technology, all Windsor Federal Savings’ logos and Sign-On boxes are protected so that you can authenticate their legitimacy in real time before you divulge anything confidential.  This technology puts fraudsters out of business and you in control of your confidential information.

How does it work?

To authenticate the web content we have protected (our logos and Sign-On boxes), here is all you need to do:

  • Download the small, free reader called VerificationEngine from the Windsor Federal Savings website (www.windsorfederal.com) or go to www.vengine.com.

  • The download is easy and takes just a few moments.

  • Once installed, when you roll your mouse over our authenticated content (logos and Sign-On boxes), a bright green border will be displayed around the edge of your screen.

  • If you need help or have questions with the installation, please go to www.vengine.com.  There you will find support information and frequently asked questions.

And green means you are good to go.

At Windsor Federal Savings, we are committed to your online safety.  The “Green is Good to Go” display means that you can never be reeled in by a phishing attack and that you are at the REAL Windsor Federal Savings website.  Further, many other major financial institutions, online stores and public companies, e.g. Paypal, Amazon, Yahoo, etc… have protected logos on their first page – so you can verify the authenticity of many large sites as well.

This new web content technology is just one way we are working hard to protect your confidential information so you can rest assured that your banking information is always secure.  For more information, go to www.vengine.com

What does the green frame around my screen mean?

Through sophisticated technology, VerificationEngine matches company logo’s or sign-on boxes to legitimate company sites.  So now you can authenticate that the site you are visiting actually is from the company it claims to be.

What if I don’t see a green border when I roll the mouse over the logo?

It can mean a few things, but usually you just need to wait until the page fully loads before you try and verify the web content.  Once the page loads, then you should be able to see the green border around protected content when you roll over the logo.

If after the page loads you still don’t see a green border, it could mean that the site did not protect that specific content.  Today, larger sites and most banks are registered with us and you will see the green border if you roll your mouse over the logo on the first page of these larger sites.

At Windsor Federal Savings, we integrated this technology into the pages that we wanted to be sure were protected and these pages included logos and Sign-On boxes.

Why doesn’t the green border show up on all pages?

Some merchants only have a few pages verified.  As a double check – only input sensitive data on pages where the logo or sign-on box can be verified and where you see a ‘padlock’ symbol in your browser.  This symbol indicates you have a secure encrypted session with the server.

Why doesn’t the green border show up right away?

VerificationEngine will work once the entire page has loaded.  If you tried to verify a logo or sign-on box when your computer was still receiving the content from the site, it will not verify the contents.  Simply try again when the page has fully loaded.

VerificationEngine will not work with my Internet Explorer?

We recommend that you use Internet Explorer 5.01 or above.

Are other browsers supported?

Currently VerificationEngine will work with Internet Explorer, AOL, Netscape and Mozilla Firefox.

How do I un-install VerificationEngine?

Simply open Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs and select VerificationEngine.

Is this usable with visual impairments or other disabilities and if so what sounds can I use for Audio-Authentication?

Yes – VerificationEngine is fully compatible with the American with Disabilities Accessibility Act and any WAV file can be used.
